In the organization of an international eventing competition, there is a person who is essential to ensure the smooth running of the event: the technical delegate, also known as the T.D.

The person who has this role is appointed by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), and he or she is the person who supervises everything: the smooth running of the event, ensuring that the timing is respected, the verification of the courses, the timing of when the riders are to compete, the calculation of the minutes of the cross country course, that the rules are respected… He or she also ensures that the jury can judge the competition in the best conditions.
This year at the World Championships, this essential role has been given to an Irish woman, Gillian Kyle. This is my first time at the World Championships, but I have been a T.D. for about 10 years. As a matter of fact, I used to compete, but following a car accident, I had to give it up. As I still wanted to be involved in the competition, becoming a T.D. was the ideal solution.“ When she is not involved in competitions, she breeds sports horses with her husband. “Our son Mark rides our horses in competitions.“ The said Mark is competing this year in the World Championships for 7 year old horses with Willow Fairgreen Attraction and is married to Tanya Liddle, who won the World Championships in 1997 with Just Another Buck.
But Mrs Kyle also has another occupation, which is by no means a minor one, as for the last three years, she has been the director of the Punchestown CCI*** ! “However, I prefer the role of T.D., as it is less of a headache!“, she says smiling.
She is thrilled by her first experience at the World Championships:” It is really wonderful. The competition is excellent, the cross country course is really superb and it is really easy to work with the organizational team.“
